I don’t see any evidence that people have made smart decisions based on their knowledge of the past. To me, the present is what is important, not the past. I think that people, the weather, and politics determine what happens, not the past.
People can change. We can’t assume that people will continue to hate one another just because they have had hated one another for years. Look at Turkey and Greece. When Turkey had an earthquake, Greece sent aid. When Greece had an earthquake, Turkey sent aid. Now, these two countries are cooperating and looking forward to improved relations. No doubt, if we looked at the past, we could have thought this was a lost cause. But people change.
The weather can change. Farmers think that they can plant certain crops because these crops have always grown well in their fields before. But the weather can change. There can be a long drought. The crops that have always worked well , will die. A drought-resistant crop needs to be tried. If we looked at the past, we would not have changed our crop and we would have lost our farm. Weather changes.
Politics an change. According to my way of thinking, politicians must be responsive to changes in the people. If politicians looked only at the past, they would always say the same thing. People change. On the whole, people today care about human rights. They warn all people to have the equal rights. If we looked at the past in the United States, we would see a lot of discrimination against races, women, and *ual orientation. Now, that is changing. Politicians changes, too.
As a rule what is important today is to follow the mood of the moment. We can’t be looked in the past. It doesn’t do us any good to think about the past. People, the weather, and politics can change in any direction. The direction of this change, in my opinion, can not be predicted by studying the past.

一、引言
英語學習的重要性毋庸置疑，職業(yè)教育對學生英語學習也提出了注重實際應用能力的高要求，學生需要掌握基礎(chǔ)知識，還要了解專業(yè)英語，知識內(nèi)容越來越豐富。為了配合這一需求，這些年來，我們對英語教學的教材及教學方法進行了大量的改革和嘗試。但無論英語教材或英語教學法怎樣改，有一樣是不能變的，那就是音標的學習。換句話說，最基本、也最容易被我們忽視的音標，才是學生能否學好英語的關(guān)鍵。
二、課堂教學情景
每屆接到新學生時，我都會問他們一個問題:學英語最重要也是最基本的是學什么?這個問題的設(shè)定，一方面可以了解學生這些年來對英語的認識;同時，也想幫助學生重新審視英語學習的關(guān)鍵。
經(jīng)過討論得到以下幾種觀點：
1.詞匯量最重要，詞匯是語言系統(tǒng)重要的組成部分，所以，也是語言學習的重要內(nèi)容，只有詞匯量積累多了，才算學英語；
2.語法是最基本的，它之所以稱為“法”，體現(xiàn)出語法是語言的基本規(guī)律，有約束限定的作用，既然是“法”，肯定是重要的；
3.學英語最基本的是口語，語言是用來交流的，誰也不會用語法去交流；
4.還有同學認為公共三級、四級考試對是最基本的；
三、高職高專學生英語學習現(xiàn)狀及對其提出的新要求
中國學生學習英語的主要途徑是課堂聽講，而傳統(tǒng)的英語教學法實際上是“語法翻譯教學法”，勢必導致了教學手段和過程較為單一，且忽視聽說能力的訓練;單純通過對脫離語境的語言材料進行分析，使學生只學會理性的句法分析，不利于培養(yǎng)學生聽說方面的交際能力。
上大學后英語學習顯得更為重要，學生要過級考試，要掌握一些專業(yè)英語，學會閱讀外文版專業(yè)書籍，還要練習口語交際和寫作等。大部分學生，只要肯下功夫，應付等級考試還是沒有問題的。
當今社會國際化程度越來越高，對外交流需求逐漸增多，對于全世界使用范圍最廣的英語，如果學生的學習目標繼續(xù)停留于應試和拿等級證書肯定是不夠的。這就要求他們必須張嘴！但強迫學生張開口后，一個弊端暴露出來:好多學生的口語十分拗口，究其原因，我們大多數(shù)的學生并不是來自城市，他們孩提時跟父母學講的是方言，升入小學、中學才慢慢開始接觸普通話，但仍有好多老師用方言來教學。所以，在他們學習外語的過程中，需要從方言轉(zhuǎn)到普通話，再轉(zhuǎn)到外語，這就要比第一習得語言是普通話的城里學生在一開始多走了一步彎路。另外，師資條件也是不可忽視的一個重要原因，好多學生反映，之前老師們說出來的英語，也帶著濃厚的鄉(xiāng)音。導致學生們總覺得考試中最難的就是聽力，其實聽力不好，不是我們聽得不多，單詞記得不多，而是自己說出來的英語有問題。這個問題完全印證了李陽老師說過的話，說河南英語就只能聽懂河南英語，說新疆英語就只能聽懂新疆英語，說純正的美式英文，就一定能聽懂美國英文。
四、打好音標基礎(chǔ)才是學好英語的基本條件
這個道理其實很簡單，音標對于英語學習的重要性就相當于漢語拼音對于學習中文的重要性。回想我們在學習母語的時候，最初學習的就是拼音，如果沒有拼音作指導，漢字對我們來說可能也只是一種符號，根本無法拼讀。同樣，如果沒有國際音標，英語單詞對我們來說更是外國人的符號，我們不認識，沒法讀，那單詞的作用也要被顛覆了。
但為什么作為母語的拼音我們都學了，但我的大部分學生卻說從小根本沒有接受過作為第二語言的基礎(chǔ)——國際音標的正規(guī)學習呢?其實，小學初中的教科書中都有關(guān)于國際音標的要求和拼讀練習，但在大多數(shù)學校都被無情的忽視了，因為關(guān)于音標的考核幾乎沒有。記得小學剛開始接觸英語時用的學習方法，現(xiàn)在想起來極為荒唐，例如，用拼音，甚至用漢字來標注發(fā)音。其實，學生們也不喜歡用這些不標準的方法學習，可有誰教過標準的方法?又有誰告訴學生還有音標這樣一個約束?為什么一開始學英語就是What’sthis?
What’sthat?It’sacake，而不是國際音標呢?從長遠的角度來說這是對學生的不負責任，英語教學的失誤。導致一大批學生在小學或初中階段因沒有打好基礎(chǔ)而產(chǎn)生了對英語的厭惡和恐懼。經(jīng)過十幾年這樣的學習，怎么可能在大學期間就把英語補回來呢?
而如果先學好音標，情況就能大有改觀：
學好音標，首先可以提高英語發(fā)音的準確性。發(fā)音是最直觀的評價我們英語水平高低的標準，而好的發(fā)音反過來在語音、語調(diào)、語速等方面都會起到很好的`促進作用。
學好音標，還可以讓我們告別先前以讀、寫為主的啞巴英語。規(guī)范了發(fā)音，掌握了地道的口語，自信心自然提高，不必再擔心說出來的英文會招人笑，口難開了。
學好音標，某種程度上來說，對積累詞匯起著決定性作用。學生看到一個陌生的單詞，通過音標就能準確拼讀，從而達到有效的記憶單詞，慢慢產(chǎn)生學英語的興趣，這才是必經(jīng)之路。反過來說，拼寫單詞有的時候提筆就忘，我們也可以利用正確的發(fā)音自己恢復單詞的拼寫。那我們的詞匯量也在這一正一反中得到很好的積累了。
學好音標，英語的自學能力也在此過程中隨之提高了。
綜上所述，學好英語最基本的就是打好語音基礎(chǔ)，無論我們的英語教學采用哪種模式，對于我們生活在非英語環(huán)境下的學生來說，牢固掌握英語最基本的音素——音標，打好扎實的基礎(chǔ)，才是學好英語最科學、合理、有效的途徑。

學習新概念的重要性
《新概念英語》由英國著名的語言教育專家L.G.Alexander先生編寫，歷經(jīng)半個多世紀而經(jīng)久不衰，因為它可以幫助學習者在比較短的時間內(nèi)全方位地提高自身的聽說讀寫譯五方面的素質(zhì)。
第一部分，聽力。大家完全可以把《新概念英語》當成是一套很好的聽力教材，對聽力有很大的幫助。
第二部分，詞匯。新概念教材課文里所學習的單詞都是最基本、最常用的詞匯，所以大家一定要掌握。
第三部分，語法和閱讀。課后的習題練習和同步測試，鞏固學習內(nèi)容，檢驗學習效果。

新概念英語最重要的學習方法
最重要的是要“聽讀結(jié)合”。
“聽”不是單純的聽一兩次就夠了，而是分泛聽和精聽。
泛聽就是大致的聽，這個主要是用于提升語感，比如說你可以一邊吃飯或一邊做別的事情一邊聽，不需要很刻意，能捕捉到幾個單詞就是幾個單詞。連續(xù)聽幾個月之后，你的聽力和英語水平都會漸漸提高。有童鞋要問：那聽煩了該怎么辦呢？所以說在選擇聽力材料上一定要選擇自己喜歡的素材，如喜歡的電影或美劇英劇（小編當年選的就是《緋聞女孩》），然后反復聽，而且不用專門聽，哪怕你做事情當作背景音都是可以呢！
精聽是仔細的聽，一句話一聽，這個主要是練習模仿。選擇一種發(fā)音方式，一字一句模仿。
另外一個就是讀。你可以一個人關(guān)在小黑屋里隨心所欲的讀，也可以面向大庭廣眾，大聲的讀，但一定要出聲，否則自己都聽不到自己的聲音，還指望和別人用英文流利對話！還可以一邊讀一邊錄，然后聽自己的錄音，從而判斷自己讀的究竟離原版有多遠。
一直不鼓勵別人死記硬背，因為背誦就如同任務(wù)一般，剝奪了英語學習的興趣。但是如果你多聽多讀，一篇文章反復聽反復讀，不需要背誦，自然而然，你就記下來了。

一直以來，大部分學生在學校里接受的英語學習都是以應試為主，為了應付各種以筆試為主的英語考試，在多年的英語學習過程中，老師給學生教授更多的是詞匯和語法方面的知識，能運用英語流暢地進行交流的學生人數(shù)并不是很多。“啞巴”英語已經(jīng)越來越成為學習英語最大的障礙。
說到底，英語口語是一種技能，尤其是依照當前經(jīng)濟的發(fā)展趨勢，我國與國際的交流越來越緊密，學習實用的口語知識，可以應對工作、商務(wù)、出國等方面遇到的問題。
從母語習得的過程來看，幼兒、小孩的語言學習與運用是不需要專門學習那些經(jīng)專家總結(jié)的并具有嚴重割裂性質(zhì)的語法的。如有理想的語言環(huán)境，少兒學習外語也是毋須專門學習語法的。
由于國人學習外語過于重視語法而導致聾子英語、啞巴英語等現(xiàn)象，語法學習更是受到了無以復加的攻擊。我也極端反對過于以分裂的方式學習語法，平時帶自己小孩學習英語時也是以聽、說(含背)、閱讀為主，但我也承認，我還是避免不了要夾雜著教他點語法。對此，我只能這樣說：這完全是被語言環(huán)境所逼、迫不得已的拙劣輔助方法。
只能再說一下：不管是少兒還是成年人學習外語，當然要以聽、說(含背)、閱讀、寫為主，必須拋棄割裂活生生語言、以語法和做練習為主的'拙劣學習方式。與此同時，語法學習方式雖然受到激烈的抨擊，但由于語言環(huán)境的嚴重不足，適當?shù)恼Z法講解與學習是必不可少的。
君不見，好多在國外學習、生活多年甚至一二十年的國人，初接觸，因為他們能講一些很地道的口語且語音語調(diào)頗具什么倫敦腔或紐約腔，我們會錯誤地認為他們的英語很棒。其實，這是十足的假象。一旦輪到要寫作，或在正式的舞臺上進行英語談判、辯論時，他們脆弱的英語基礎(chǔ)就暴露無遺。
語法到底重不重要呢?
如果說你不參加任何筆試類的考試的話，語法對你來說，也許不重要，而對于口語來講語法到底中不重要呢?我可以這樣講，不能說不重要，也不能說重要，是不是太模棱兩可了，我說不重要的原因是，按照傳統(tǒng)教育的陋習，如果我們太精通語法的話，就會一說話的時候，就會想語法和單詞，必須讓每句話都符合語法的規(guī)則，于是半天才會說出一句話，我在大學的導師，專業(yè)八級，詞匯量成山，可是一說英語的時候，就需要考慮半天，因為太精通語法了，說出的英語實在很別扭，和精讀課本里的文章差不多，實在難以接受，這就是我們太精通語法所造成的現(xiàn)象。
而我說重要的原因是什么呢?
美國人講話中并不是每句話都不符合語法規(guī)則的，你可以看英文電影的時候，換成英文字幕來看，你就會發(fā)現(xiàn)，70%以上的對話句子，完全符合我們所掌握的語法，就像現(xiàn)在完成時和現(xiàn)在完成進行時，表達的思想絕對是不一樣的，這兩個時態(tài)是老美最常用的時態(tài)，我在剛開始自學的時候，和老外說出的句子，幾乎都是病句，純粹是用單詞連在一塊的，根本不存在任何句式、時態(tài)、和動詞詞性的變化，可以說是一塌糊涂，因為，我看過一篇文章，是一位大師講過的話，叫做胡說英語，他主張不用懂任何語法，就把單詞放在一起，就可以講英語了，其實，這絕對是謬論，那樣的英語句子，把老外都能搞瘋了，因為純屬是胡編亂造，我在當?shù)亻_了兩年的培訓班，剛開始時，只會點口語，不懂語法，而我們這里偏偏重視應試教育，結(jié)果可想而知，學生成績太差了，口語、聽力倒是不錯。
結(jié)果后來30月一個月都沒有人學了，后來我鉆研了歷年的高考模擬試題和真題，徹底地進行了研究，沒想到語法如此簡單，幾個月就徹底掌握了，這回我的學生就源源不斷了，因為我保證他們高考120分，無效全額退款，而且一個人收費20xx元，培訓時間一年，周六1個半小時，周日一個半小時，全年都是周六、周日培訓，這樣，我就可以在平時進行網(wǎng)絡(luò)培訓了，對于，我掌握語法后，再講出的口語，就沒有語法錯誤了，十分正確，再也不會像以前講出那種胡編亂造的口語了，通過看了N編的老友記，我的口語既自然，地道、也符合語法規(guī)則，所以說，掌握語法很重要，就怕你掌握語法后，一說話的時候，就按照語法規(guī)則來構(gòu)思句子，那就糟糕了，我傳授學員的語法能力，是活學活用的，說英語的時候是絕對不需要考慮語法的，而且還是絕對符合語法規(guī)則的，這叫做“活語法”

什么是英語語法
在這里我們首先要明確什么是真正意義上的語法？何謂“語法”？《牛津高級英漢詞典》的解釋是：“Grammar—rules for forming words and combining them into sentences．”正因為語法揭示了詞形變化和遣詞造句的規(guī)律。語法是研究詞性變化和句子結(jié)構(gòu)的科學。語法，詞匯，語音是構(gòu)成語言的三大要素。語法是語言結(jié)構(gòu)系統(tǒng)的一個方面，對語言實踐有著積極的指導作用。它具有抽象性、生成性、穩(wěn)定性三個基本特點。
為什么要學習英語語法
從中國學生學習英語的環(huán)境來看，必須學語法。因為在缺乏語言環(huán)境下學習英語，只有掌握系統(tǒng)的基礎(chǔ)知識和語法結(jié)構(gòu)，規(guī)范我們的口語，提高獲取英語信息的能力，這樣就能才能事半功倍，達到真正提高英語學習的效率，增強運用英語進行交際的準確性，從而更好地吻合新課改的教學目標，即增強實際語言的應用能力。
從培養(yǎng)學生英語交際能力角度來看，必須教語法。語法知識是交際能力不可缺的一種語言形式，語法能力是交際能力的支持系統(tǒng)，用交際教學法意味著教學生使用目的語完成交際任務(wù)，交際能力的開展幫助學習者驗證目的語的語法假設(shè)，鞏固語法知識。反之，對語言形式的正確把握將促進交際能力的提高。語言學家認為，語法是語言發(fā)生作用的框架；沒有語法，人們公認的交流思想形式就沒有一致性，就無法組織語言，人們也就無法進行交流。實踐性強的語言知識，
特別是語法知識，可使學生越學越明白，越學越容易，越學越輕松，從而能激發(fā)學生深層的'、持久的學習興趣從語法的性質(zhì)看，語法是語言賴以形成和發(fā)展的要素，是掌握語言的必用工具。語法能力是交際能力的有效途徑和保證，同時，交際能力又是語法能力的實踐和最終目的。社會語言學家海默斯認為，交際能力不僅包括語言形式的正確、語言的可接受性，還必須考慮語言是否恰當。英語教學法專家魏多遜指出，一個語法正確的句子如果使用場合不正確依舊不能達到交際的目的。教學實踐表明，沒有較好的語法基本功，難以培養(yǎng)學生進行交際的能力。由此可見，語言能力并不是交際能力，而交際能力卻理所當然包括語言能力。沒有語言能力作基礎(chǔ)，交際能力就會成為無本之木；不依靠語法學習語言就會事倍功半，語言學習便成無源之水。
從學生學習英語的目的來看，必須學好語法。在英語閱讀過程中，語法是一塊能幫助學生正確理解的敲門磚。語法教學的目的不只是為了學生掌握語法，更重要的是讓他們獲得學好英語的工具。具備一定的語法能力可以更有效地提高學生的英語書面表達能力，進而提高口頭表達能。所以①語法知識的掌握程度的高低是直接影響英語閱讀速度和質(zhì)量的一個關(guān)鍵因素。②語法知識更是英語寫作的重要技巧之一：在很大程度上，英語語法的正確性是評價一篇英語文章水平的高低的一個重要評判標準。③語法知識是英語口語準確、流利的一個指南針。學生要想用英語表達個人的意圖，必須掌握一定量的詞匯和句型。
